frequently asked questions

At what mileage should the carbon clean be performed?

Carbon Doctor recommends the first clean to be done prior to 50,000km. The onset of the negative affects start prior to this with consumption taking a dive as soon as 30,000km. Many car owners buy their vehicles used and have never realized how the car ran from day one. Various examples of build up over different mileage can be seen in our gallery.

Will I save on fuel?

All customers have shown a increase in engine efficiency with some models showing as much as a 3L/100km improvement after the carbon clean. The improvement is due to a change in the torque characteristic of the engine resulting in less throttle useage.

How will my performance change?

How will my performance change?

Most vehicles show a large increase of torque from idle. On naturally aspirated cars it’s a serious restriction of the ports resulting in significant power losses.

On turbo cars the spool up is far quicker and the boost hold at high rpm lasts longer. Cars with detonation problems benefit greatly allowing the DME to adapt and use more timing.

All vehicles show a smoother and quieter idle and ride.

Will I need to retune my car?

How will my performance change?

The DME will correct for the more airflow over the initial first 30km. A retune is not necessary unless vehicles where having difficulty running higher stage modified ecu maps.

At Carbon Doctor we perform a maintenance clean that is non detectable by the agents. OEM gaskets and seals are used on all vehicles and utmost care is taken in re installing the stock components using recommended manufacturer torque settings.

We aim for a same day turnaround but prefer receiving the vehicle the evening before. This allows the cylinder head to cool down and the carbon build up hardens from a hot tar like paiste to a harder compound allowing for a more effective clean.

  • Audi RS6/7 V8 TFSI
  • Polo GTI 1.4 TSI
  • VW/Audi 1.4 TSI 118kw (turbo and supercharged)

Vehicles not mentioned above:

All direct injection vehicles will have carbon build up. Best is to get the car in and confirm manifold access and whether it would be beneficial from a cost perspective.

Intake valve cleaning is an absolute must approximately every 50 000 km if you want your engine to produce full power or think about tuning and remapping your car. Certain vehicles including the Audi RS4 requires shorter cleaning intervals due to PCV design, condition, compression ratio and turbo seal condition.
